Kirkland Lake Daycare Merges with Second Street Daycare
The Kirkland Lake Daycare will be merging with the Second Street Daycare as of January 2, 2017.
In late October 2016, DTSSAB announced large funding cuts for all day cares in the district, due to less dollars received from the Ministry of Education. This decrease in funding has caused all administrators to review operations and look for economies while still ensuring excellent child care. Staff, Municipal Council, Second Street Board members, DTSSAB staff and Ministry of Education Staff all discussed the possibilities and cost savings of one administrative body operating two centers. Municipal Council has been reviewing all programs and departments over the past quarter to determine what discretionary services could be offered by someone else in the community, at a lower cost.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO STAFF AND FAMILIES AT THE QUEEN STREET LOCATION?
We expect families to experience a seamless transition as The Town of Kirkland Lake ceases operation, and Second Street Day Care begins. Staff from the Kirkland Lake Day Care will have the opportunity to continue their employment with Second Street Day Care, so children will see the same familiar faces each day. Programming, staff development, health and safety are already all standardized through the Ministry of Education and the licensing that the daycare receives.
In this time of fiscal austerity, the Town is supportive of this merger, as it will provide continuous Daycare Services for the families of Kirkland Lake and preserve jobs in our Community for years to come.
